CHAPTER

THIRTEEN

IAN

After seeing my last patient, I go to Nethermire House. I need to prove to Brin that everything I said and did yesterday wasn’t hollow words and actions. I crave him like a tub of ice cream at the end of a bad day. Martha answers the intercom and opens the gate, but it’s Brin who greets me once I’ve stopped the car in front of the house. He’s in his human form, but by the time I’ve finished showing him how much I need him, his concentration is as wrecked as his arsehole.

We lie in his bed, cuddling, desperately needing to shower. I have a beautiful, chaotic, sensual boy in my arms. Why would I want to move?

“Tell me about your family.” Brin combs his fingers through my chest hair.

I’ve never been with anyone—man or woman—who appreciated my furry chest as much as Brin does.

“What do you want to know?”

“Anything. Everything. Are you close?”

“Yes. I have two brothers. I’m the middle child. We’re spread across the country now. Victor, my older brother, is an architect. He co-owns a firm in London. Our parents keep joking that they’re going to get him to design a house for them, but it’s never happened.”

“Why?”

“Financial reasons. Buying land and building a house cost a lot of money. Money they don’t have. If I could help them, I would, but neither priests nor nurses earn that much. Besides, they’re probably too old to want to bother. Dad is seventy-seven, and Mum is seventy-five.”

“A little older than Mother. Well, a little older than she looks, anyway.”

“Yes.”

“What about your younger brother?”

“Neil is a defence barrister. He settled down in Newcastle with his wife. They have two children. Victor isn’t married. To my knowledge, he’s never dated. I assume he’s asexual, aromantic, or both. We’ve never discussed it.”

“Are your family religious?”

“Nominally. They had the three of us baptised and took us to mass at Christmas and Easter. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I started going more often.”

Brin uses the end of his soft tail to stroke my thigh. “What made you decide to become a priest?”

I stare at the ceiling for a long time. The plaster has a few hairline cracks in it. “I felt at home in the church. Whenever I was lost, worried, or afraid, I’d visit a church and find peace there either by talking to a priest or simply by praying. I was drawn to the church. I loved God and wanted to serve him. I also wanted to help and look after people. To offer them guidance and support.” I sigh.

“Do you miss it?”

“Sometimes. But as I said before, I couldn’t keep serving a god and a church that would call me a sinner for desiring men. It wasn’t even as if I had plans to act on my desire. I would have stayed celibate for the rest of my life if the church had accepted me as a bisexual priest. While I wouldn’t have been thrown out, I would have been expected to keep my sexuality a secret.
